Match safes, generally made with hinged covers, kept matches
dry and protected them from errant sparks. They date back to
as early as the 1830's when friction matches were first invented.
Some had an open section in the back to serve as a receptacle
for
used matches which might later be used as splints to transfer
a flame to light candles, lamps, or relight a fire.
